Janet Dowd: Home

Hi and welcome to my website!

Come on in, make yourself comfy and have a good old read about me, the musicians, our music and the craic we've had along the way.

NEW ALBUM!!!  'HOME' released on 1st May 2017

After the success of the last two albums ‘300 Miles’ & ‘Sailing Away’ which both took the number 1 position in Irish Music Magazines Top 10 folk albums, I have released my 3rd album ‘HOME’ on Blue Cow Records. It features a heartfelt collection inspired by songs & stories of home, places to call home and those longing for home. The great news is that it's already  Number 1 in Irish Music Magazines Top 10 folk albums!

It was produced, recorded and mixed by the highly acclaimed musician & producer Donogh Hennessy in Dingle, Co.Kerry and the following top class lineup created a truly mighty sound.

Donogh Hennessy - Lúnasa (guitars, bass, programming), Alan Doherty - Gráda, Aldoc, Lord of the Rings (whistles), Jimmy Higgins - Altan, Christy Moore (percussion), Martin Brunsden - Hothouse Flowers (Double Bass), Naimh Varian Barry - Solas (violin & viola), Tom Leary - Lindisfarne, Feast of Fiddles (fiddle), Dessie Kelliher (banjo), Pauline Scanlon - Lumiere, Sharon Shannon Band (backing vocals), Teresa Horgan - The Outside Track (backing vocals), Brendan Goff (piano), Colin Henry (dobro).

Sitting amongst tracks by legendary songwriters such as Eric Bogle, Dougie MacLean and Brendan Graham are 3 songs written by myself.

‘Westport Town’ is a tribute to this beautiful part of Ireland visited for many years, the friends made and craic had along the way.

‘Forbidden Love’ was written after staying in the Dobbins Inn in Carrickfergus, where the ghost of Maud is said to roam the halls in search of her secret love Buttoncap who was a soldier of the garrison in nearby Carrickfergus Castle. A tunnel linked the Dobbins Inn (formerly Maud’s home) with the castle and this is where Maud and Buttoncap secretly met. However, it was also where her husband lay in wait after discovering their illicit affair, confronting and killing them both.

‘A Simple Life’ was written after reaching a milestone age when you begin to appreciate the beauty of life, your home and all you have.
